There are several requirements to write for publication. The foremost requirement is that the writing content, style, length and deadline are mandated by the publication's editor, not the writer. The second requirement is that the writing must be carefully targeted to the publications readership. Of course, the writing must also be good.
Writing for publication does have many benefits. Often a well-written article is more effective and has a longer shelf-life with your market than the best advertisement or brochure. But a published article also has other benefits -- often the online publication provides high-quality links to your website and can provide a useful excuse to engage existing clients or prospects.
Some of the writing for publication we do is contracted by clients - things like press releases, feature articles, ghosted articles, blogs, etc. But we also provides regular freelance contributions of our own - including feature articles, editorial comments and book reviews.
